Ningbo History Digital Humanities project | unearthing valuable treasures buried in the history
Committed to preserving and perpetuating Ningbo's history and culture, the members of the Ningbo History Digital Humanities project are having a busy yet rewarding summer. Last month, the project team participated in the 2023 Maritime Silk Road Culture and Tourism Expo and publicised their latest research findings.
The Ningbo History Digital Humanities project is a large-scale interdisciplinary project that conducts themed research around Ningbo history. The research topics cover local history and culture, climate, literature, religion, historical maps, historical photos, city morphology, water management, urban landscape, and may be further expanded.
At the Maritime Silk Road Culture and Tourism Expo, the team members showcased their project outcomes using a Geographic Information System (GIS), aligning texts, images, videos, animations, and 3D models with historical and geographical data. The data were displayed in a four-dimensional electronic map format, enabling the audience to explore Ningbo's history and culture from various perspectives. Additionally, they digitised cultural artefacts using photogrammetric modelling and laser scanning and built a digital museum platform on a 3D framework. In this exhibition, the bronze axe with a rowing pattern, a first-class precious cultural relic from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period, was digitally showcased for the first time through this technology.
"The goal of this project is to digitally recreate the progression of Ningbo by establishing a comprehensive, reliable, authoritative, and professional database platform. This platform offers bilingual research materials in Chinese and English for scholars and researchers worldwide to study Ningbo's development," said May Yan, Director of the Library of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), who initiated the project. As she explained, some culturally significant historical landscapes can quickly vanish in urbanisation without proper preservation and handling. By employing digital technology to safeguard information like the positions of diverse ancient Ningbo locales, old photographs, and documents, a contemporary version of the "Amap" of ancient Ningbo can be formulated, presenting the visage of the old city to future generations.
At the 2022 China Digital Humanities Conference, the Ningbo History Digital Humanities project, co-directed by three scholars from UNNC – Dr Jing Xie, Dr Tengwen Long and Dr Yuting Tang - and developed by the UNNC Library, won the Excellent Design Award; the "Soul Jar" digital project, led by the project team’s student member Chaoju Wang (under the guidance of Dr Xie), was awarded the Best Qingmiao Award.
According to Dr Xie, Associate Professor in Architecture and Built Environment at UNNC, since the inception of the Ningbo History Digital Humanities project in 2019, over 200 students from diverse programmes, including International Studies, International Communications, and Architecture, have participated in the project. Many of these students have derived immense benefits from the project, earning themselves places in prestigious universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.
Currently, the first batch of project participants, represented by Wenbo Wu, Yuting He, Yazhuo Wang, and Xinming Li, have graduated. In the next issue, we will delve into the Ningbo History Digital Humanities project from their perspectives, sharing the personal growth they have achieved through the project and revealing the allure of historic Ningbo.
