Parents at Daystar Academy are active across a wide range of professions.

Today’s topic is being a lawyer.

Guest Speaker

Li Jie(Mother of Ella Wang, Ninth Grade)
Profession:Lawyer, specializing in major commercial dispute resolution and modern corporate governance
Firm:Senior Partner, Beijing DOCVIT Law Firm

Is Law a “Late-Blooming” Career?

Yes—law is highly practice-oriented. Typically:

First 2–3 years: Build fundamentals, handle simpler cases, and learn under senior lawyers.

Years 3–7: develop one or two areas of specialization.

Around age 30:most lawyers can independently handle non-litigation matters and litigation/arbitration.

“If You Have No Family Resources, Don’t Become a Lawyer.”

—Do You Agree?

I do not.

Young lawyers must first build solid professional skills and become truly competent.

Their initial sources of cases come not from society at large, but from their firms and senior lawyers within those firms.

The career path is quite clear:

① Start as a legal assistant: build foundational skills by handling diverse cases.

② After becoming a practicing lawyer: With independent case sources, one many practice independently. Without case sources, one may work as a salaried lawyer to continue strengthening expertise. The stronger your skills, cooperation, and service mindset, the more senior lawyers will want to work with you.

③ Mature lawyer: handle cases independently, become a core team member, lead teams, and eventually become a partner.

After university, some may also choose to work in government agencies or large corporations before returning to legal practice, filling knowledge gaps through real-world experience.

Many young colleagues around me have no “connections” or “resources”. Through diligence, responsibility, and integrity, they have become trusted collaborators—and they earn a good living.

Having family resources is helpful, but only if you can turly carry the repsonsibility.A lack of connections should never exclude a motivated, hardworking, and cooperative young person from entering the legal profession—or from becoming an excellent lawyer.

Most Promising Legal Fields in the Next 5–10 Years

Traditional legal services:always in demand

Cross-border investment and dispute resolution:significant growth opportunities as Chinese companies expand globally. This is an excellent path for international-school students with strong language skills and cultural fluency.

AI and emerging-technology intellectual property law:talent is scarce; early entrants will become pioneers.

The Biggest Change in the Past Decade?

The rise of AI. AI has greatly improved efficiency, posing both challenges and opportunities for young lawyers. It accelerates legal research and case retrieval, replacing some junior-level tasks.

Rather than resisting AI, lawyers should learn to use it well. Those who do will grow faster and stronger.

Who Is Well Suited to Be a Lawyer?

Anyone with ideals and passion who studies law and completes professional training can become a qualified lawyer. That said, three qualities offer an advantage:

* Clear logical thinking and strong analytical ability

* Strong communication skills, both written and oral

* Willingness to study deeply and work hard

For Non-Chinese Nationals Wishing to Practice in China

One may obtain foreign legal qualifications and work in China at international law firms on non-litigation or arbitration matters.

Some Chinese firms also engage foreign lawyers as consultants for cross-border non-litigation work.

If You Had To Rate the Legal Profession Out of 10?

I would give it a 10, for three simple reasons:

① I truly love this profession

The satisfaction of organizing complex facts, anticipating outcomes, thinking creatively, and ultimately helping clients maximize their interests through the law is real and deeply fulfilling. The legal profession has shaped my personal growth, and I am deeply grateful for it.

② Effort is rewarded

The more professional and responsible your work, the more trust you earn—and the more appropriate the return. Income is a natural outcome of good work, not the goal itself.

③ It forces continuous growth

Law is a lifelong-learning profession. After every case, I reflect: What could have been done better? Where can I improve? Financial, tax, and psychological insights— all are tools in a lawyer’s toolkit. As with doctors, the longer you practice, the more valuable you become.

The Biggest Challenge for Young Lawyers

Challenges vary, but those with strong platforms and good mentors progress more smoothly.A common difficulty is impatience—especially during slow markets.

Frequently switching careers or abandoning the profession prematurely is often regrettable, unless you truly find that the law is not the right fit.

Skills can be trained. Courage, perseverance, professionalism, and a growth mindset are deeper qualities—ones that must be consciously cultivated.
