The Origin: A Pact with the Beginning of the Year

“立”，始建也。“春”，蠹也，萬物之始。立春，為二十四節氣之首，亦為“歲始”。每逢公歷2月3日至5日，東風送暖，大地解凍，標志著四季新的輪回自此開啟，萬物含孕生機。

"立"signifies beginning and establishment. "春" represents stirring and germination, the start of all things. As the first of the 24 solar terms and the "beginning of the year," Spring Begins arrives between February 3rd and 5th. The east wind brings warmth, the earth thaws, marking the start of a new cycle of seasons, with all things harboring vitality.

初候·東風解凍

First Pentad: The East Wind Thaws the Frozen Land. The gentle east wind blows across the land, as frozen rivers and mountains gradually awaken.

二候·蟄蟲始振

Second Pentad: Hibernating Insects Stir. From the depths of the soil, their winter slumber ends; tiny insects stir their wings, eager to emerge.

三候·魚陟負冰

Third Pentad: Fish Ascend with Ice on Backs. As the ice cracks and water ripples, fish rise to the surface, their backs glinting with fragments of floating ice—answering spring’s call.

咬春·食鮮納

Biting Spring: Eating Freshness to Invite Good Fortune. Wrapping fresh seasonal greens in thin pancakes or crunching on crisp, juicy radishes is known as “biting spring.” This custom symbolizes embracing new beginnings, attracting good fortune, and praying for health and prosperity.

打春·鞭牛勸耕

Whipping Spring: Urging Plowing by Whipping the Ox. In ancient times, local governments crafted clay oxen and whipped them with decorated whips—a ritual known as “spring whipping.” This ceremony aimed to encourage agricultural work and pray for a bumper harvest.

戴春·鬢邊生彩

Wearing Spring: Adorning Hair with Color. With deft hands, women cut colored silk into swallows, butterflies, or flowers, adorning their hair with these “spring ornaments” or “colorful ornaments.” The spring breeze sways these delicate decorations.
