如果要給理工學院建筑系學生吳辰的本科四年打上一個標簽,時下流行的“跨界”一詞,無疑最能形象地描繪他在寧諾的成長軌跡。“寧諾精神賦予了我打破常規的勇氣,讓我意識到生命的高度從來不會、也不應該被設限,更讓我對‘卓越’一詞有了新的認知。”吳辰深有感觸地說。

在寧諾這片充滿多元化和無限可能的土壤里,吳辰在玩轉“跨界”學科的過程中找到了內心的向往,面對數份全球頂級學府的碩士錄取通知書,他懷著一顆“把跨界進行到底”的決心,最終選擇了美國康奈爾大學的區域規劃offer——一個橫跨市政工程學、政府管理政策、環境保護等多個領域的研究生項目。在他看來,正是寧諾豐富的跨學科成功經歷為自己叩開了常青藤名校的大門。
01
少數派——
走進商科課堂的建筑系學生

吳辰高中畢業于山東省實驗中學,受父母職業影響的他選擇了建筑學專業。“建筑師的發展其實是一條規劃好的軌道。” 吳辰說,“比如在校期間要去學特定的課程,進入建筑事務所或設計院做實習,最后完成特定的考試、獲取特定的證書。一切都有跡可循。”
誠然,寧諾建筑學專業獲英國皇家建筑師學會(簡稱RIBA)認證,這意味著建筑學本科生在畢業時就已完成了英國皇家建筑師認證的第一階段,同時也意味著該專業的課程體系需要嚴格遵循RIBA的標準。“即便在這樣嚴格的條件下,寧諾仍給予了我自由發展的空間。于是,我在專業課之余選修了商學院的課程。” 他回憶道。

就這樣,建筑系學生吳辰走進了商學院的課堂。在《管理與戰略》課程學習中,他結合自己的專業,學到了許多市場策略和企業管理的知識。“這門課給我帶來了許多獨特的視角。其中,我最大的收獲是學會了在項目中不要只扮演一個利益相關者的思維模式。” 他解釋說:“例如在商業建筑項目中,地產的利益相關者最看重投資與回報。但如果拔高維度,這時的利益相關者就變成了城市管理者,重點也相應地變成了社會的可持續性穩定和區域發展。”這為他建筑學專業的學習和探索帶來了啟發。

玩轉“跨界”學科
照亮未來之路

選修商學院的課程并不是一個偶然的決定。事實上,這更像是吳辰在跨學科學習中不斷探索的必經之路。得益于系里豐富的學術資源和科研機會,他以助理研究員的身份先后跟隨多名教授和導師開展了城市可持續發展、住宅區設計規劃、城市間關系研究等不同方向的科研項目,對不同細分領域的前沿發展進行了深入的探索。此外,他還充分利用假期開展實習,清華大學建筑設計研究、查普門泰勒設計咨詢公司都曾留下過他的身影。
“我在跨學科學習的過程中萌生了新的想法,希望在自己專業的前提下做一些額外的嘗試。在鎖定了城市規劃這個方向后,我便順理成章地選擇了與之相關的商學院課程。”吳辰認為,學校靈活的選修課程體系、豐富的科研項目和眾多的社會實踐機會在潛移默化中形成了一套系統且專業的跨學科教學模式,幫助自己在探索中明確了未來發展的方向。
同時,跨學科的經歷和多彩的校園生活還給吳辰帶來了自信。他說:“我在和商學院同學參與商賽時,提出的見解和想法經常能受到大家的認可。此外,從參加辯論社到最終與團隊共同贏得寧波市高校辯論冠軍,以及作為理工學生收獲新加坡國立大學商學院地產項目的offer等一系列經歷,更讓我明白了只要秉持著敢想敢做的寧諾精神,生命的高度就不會被設限。”
03
“卓越”與“人”的思考

曾經,吳辰把“超預期地完成工作”作為卓越的定義。而在寧諾的四年則讓他體會到了獨有的人文關懷氣息,從而開始以“人”的維度重新思考卓越。
吳辰認為,一所學校無論是否做人文關懷、或者做到什么程度,對其本職教學任務和科研產出的影響其實是很難量化的。“但是,寧諾仍不遺余力地投入到人文關懷的工作中,而這不僅僅只停留在對學生無微不至的支持和關懷。”他說,“我曾在寧諾戰略規劃部門的實習中參與了面向社會招募殘疾員工的項目。對學校而言,無論是他們的身體狀況,還是樓梯、扶手等基礎設施,都需要進行大量的投入。寧諾對于特殊人群的關懷和對社會的貢獻讓我感受到了濃厚的人文氣息。”
在吳辰有條不紊的敘述中,不難發現這些經歷給他帶來了許多收獲和成長,“這讓我意識到在團隊合作中同樣不能忽視人文關懷,特別當我的身份是項目領導者時,我需要時刻關注每一位組員的情緒和狀態。而當團隊中有來自其它國家和地區的成員時,我還需要確保少數人的聲音也能被聽到,并讓所有人掌握的信息都是相同、平等的。”
懷著一顆感恩的心,吳辰希望自己的經歷能給更多人帶來啟發和靈感。他說:“我在寧諾深刻意識到了跨學科思維對學術研究和探索的重要性。只要勇于不斷挑戰自己的探索邊界和思維模式,就能在多學科的碰撞中發現自己內心的熱愛。”
UNNC student heading to Ivy League School through interdisciplinary study
Having received multiple master’s offer letters from top universities around the world, Chen Wu, an Architecture student of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), ultimately chose a regional planning programme from Cornell University in the United States - a postgraduate programme that spans multiple fields including municipal engineering, government management policies, and environmental protection. In his view, it was his rich interdisciplinary experience at UNNC that helped him successfully open the doors to an Ivy League School.
Chen graduated from Shandong Experimental High School and his parents' professions influenced him to choose to study architecture. "The career development of an architect is actually a well-planned track," he said.
The undergraduate programme architecture at UNNC is accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), which means that undergraduate architecture students would have completed the first phase of the RIBA certification upon graduation. It also means that the curriculum of this major must strictly adhere to RIBA standards. "Even so, UNNC still gave me the space to learn freely. In addition to my major courses, I also took courses from the business school," he recalled. While undergoing the Management and Strategy course, he combined the knowledge he gained from his major and learnt much about market strategies and business management. "This course brought me many unique perspectives. My greatest gain was learning not to think solely as a stakeholder in a project."
Chen believes that the university's flexible module selection system, rich research projects, and abundant social practice opportunities have subliminally formed a systematic and professional interdisciplinary teaching model, helping him explore and clarify the direction of his future development.
At the same time, his interdisciplinary experience and colorful campus life also gave Chen much confidence. "When participating in business competitions with students from the business school, my insights and ideas were often acknowledged by everyone. Furthermore, my series of experiences in participating in the debate club, ultimately winning the championship of the Ningbo Collegiate Debate Contest with my team, and receiving an offer for a real estate project from the National University of Singapore Business School as an engineering student helped me understand that as long as you think big and just do it as UNNC advocates, there are no limits to the heights you can scale."
Once, Chen regarded "completing work beyond expectations" as the definition of excellence. However, the unique humanistic care that UNNC offered during his four years there prompted him to rethink excellence from the "human" dimension.
"UNNC spares no effort in investing in humanistic care, which does not stop at providing students with meticulous support and care," he said. "I once participated in a project to recruit employees with a disability during my internship in the strategic planning department at UNNC. Its concern for special groups and contributions to society made me feel a strong sense of humanistic culture."
Chen has gained much and grown much from these experiences. "It made me realise that humanistic care can't be ignored in teamwork as well, especially when I am the team leader. I need to always pay attention to the emotions and well-being of each member. When there are members from other countries and regions in the team, I also need to ensure that the voices of the minority are heard, and that everyone has the same and equal information."
Chen is grateful for his experiences at UNNC and hopes that he can inspire more people. He said, "At UNNC, I deeply recognised the importance of interdisciplinary thinking. As long as you courageously break through boundaries and thinking modes in your exploration, you can discover your inner passion amidst the collision of multiple disciplines."
