Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has drawn online ridicule after struggling to deliver opening remarks in English during a White House meeting with US President Donald Trump on Thursday.
According to video footage, she attempted to use English to both greet and express appreciation for the invitation, but spoke haltingly. At one point, she gestured slightly behind her, seemingly signaling to an interpreter.
Trump appeared to pick up on the cue, saying an "excellent interpreter" was present and noting he had met the interpreter during the tenure of former prime minister Shinzo Abe. Takaichi then switched to Japanese.

The exchange quickly drew reactions on Japanese social media, with some users mocking the moment as "embarrassing" and suggesting Trump's remark implied he could not understand her English. Others criticized Takaichi for attempting to use English, saying she should have used Japanese from the outset rather than trying to "show off".
