與巴菲特的相見，是一趟照見夢想的旅程

最近，英國劍橋大學網站刊載文章，講述了寧波諾丁漢大學畢業生、現為劍橋金融碩士沈俊成的故事。不久前，沈俊成手握為數不多的“學生邀請函”，受邀赴美參加全球投資巨頭伯克希爾·哈撒韋公司2023年度股東周年大會。

在過去的半個世紀里，巴菲特與芒格聯手締造了全世界最大的投資公司。每年成千上萬名股東從全球各地來到奧馬哈一睹股神風采，共同參與這場全球矚目的頂尖投資盛會。

對于金融專業的沈俊成來說，巴菲特一直是自己專業領域的偶像，無疑也是一個遙不可及的名字。然而一件小事，直接促成了這趟照見夢想的奇妙旅程——沈俊成給巴菲特寫了一封信。

“巴菲特先生：

我對您的欽佩，始于我15歲時讀到您的傳記。您的故事非常激勵我，以至于后來我在寧波諾丁漢大學選擇金融作為我的本科專業。現在，我在劍橋大學進一步學習金融和投資。帶著對價值投資的強烈興趣，我成立了劍橋投資管理俱樂部。我們俱樂部匯集了年輕一代的投資者，現在已經成為劍橋大學最大的學生俱樂部之一。”

信寄出一個多月后，巴菲特的公司回信了，特別邀請他來參加股東大會。這位1997年出生的年輕人，將去謁見今年將滿93歲的巴菲特和99歲的芒格。

凌晨4點的鬧鐘叫醒，興奮的沈俊成排在了參會者長長隊伍的前列，讓他得以在前排座位近距離地聆聽巴菲特和芒格。現場氣氛熱烈超過了他的想象，當巴菲特與芒格落座，大屏幕現出他倆的影像時，3萬名投資者才結束持續了數分鐘的鼓掌，回身落座。從價值投資到通脹問題,從美國銀行業危機到人工智能……在接下來5個多小時的問答環節中，他聽到了巴菲特和芒格對其公司投資策略的精彩見解以及對當前的宏觀經濟趨勢妙語如珠的分析。

沈俊成說，“盡管這位‘奧馬哈先知’和他的合作伙伴年事已高，但他們的講述中融入了幾十年來積累的幽默和深刻的智慧。當一位投資者問他，人們在投資和生活中應該如何避免錯誤時，巴菲特回答他說，‘也許你可以提前寫好墓志銘，然后按照上面寫的去生活’。

"近在咫尺的時候，巴菲特就不再是一個超級富豪。他是一個如此平易近人的老人，謙遜、和藹，臉上始終浮現親切的笑容。”沈俊成說，“當少年的偶像出現在你面前的時候，這無疑是一個顛覆性的經歷。你閱讀他的書籍，受到他的啟發，隔空對話超過十年，如今竟然能當面聆聽受教，我感到特別的幸運。”

直到這場盛會結束，沈俊成仍然沉浸其中。“親身體驗這一全球盛會是無法用語言表達的。” 沈俊成說，“巴菲特數十年如一日的腳踏實地，為所有投資者做出了榜樣。作為年輕人，唯有堅定夢想，摒棄心高氣傲，在風高浪急的市場中，沉下心來學習和積累，才能行穩致遠。”

從在寧波諾丁漢大學獲得浙江省政府獎學金，創辦uFair創業項目，到入選匯豐銀行全球管培生項目，到劍橋大學創辦投資管理俱樂部，沈俊成抓住無與倫比的成長機會，奔跑在金融投資領域的夢想征途中。

“在鮐背之年，巴菲特仍然保持了充沛的精力，展現了對事業的熱愛，深深感染和鼓舞著我。”

在從美國返程的飛機上，沈俊成清晰地感到，這段非凡的旅程才剛剛開始。

UNNC graduate meets with Warren Buffett

“Sitting on the plane back to the UK, I reflected on the whirlwind few days I’d just spent in Omaha... The opportunity to see Mr Warren Buffett up close was a dream come true.”

A recent article posted on the University of Cambridge website features the story of Juncheng Shen, a graduate of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) and now studying a Master of Finance at Cambridge. The article recaps his recent trip to United States to attend the 2023 annual shareholders meeting of Berkshire Hathaway, the global investment giant.

Over the past half century, Warren Buffett and his partner Charlie Munger have created the world's largest investment firm. Every year, thousands of shareholders travel to Omaha from across the globe to witness the “Oracle of Omaha” at work and to participate in the world's premier investment event.

For Juncheng, as a finance student, Buffett had always been an idol and, in his mind, a name beyond his reach. However, it was just one small gesture that led to this amazing journey of realising his dream - Juncheng wrote a letter to Buffett.

“Mr Buffett, the admiration I have for you started when I read your biography at the age of 15. The book sparked my appetite for investing and a few years later I subsequently picked finance as my major at UNNC. Now, I am pursuing further studies in finance and investment at University of Cambridge. With a strong interest in value investing, I established the Cambridge Investment Management Club on campus, which gathers the young generation of aspiring investors and has since become one of the largest student clubs at Cambridge.”

A little over a month after the letter was sent, Buffett's company responded with a special invitation to the annual shareholders meeting. The young Juncheng, born in 1997, was officially invited to meet Buffett, who is 93 this year, and Munger, who is 99.

A 4am wake-up call to take a front position in a queue of several hundred other excited attendees, meant that Juncheng was able to secure a front-row seat, so as to be close to Buffett and Munger. The atmosphere was more electric than Juncheng could have ever imagined, and when Buffett and Munger took their seats with their images appearing on the big screen, the 30,000 investors deliver a standing ovation minutes long. During a five-hour Q&A session, the audience heard from Buffett and Munger on everything from AI to banking failures, renewable energy to geopolitics, and they even shared their wisdom on living life well lived.

Juncheng explains, “Despite their remarkable ages, the ‘Oracle of Omaha’ and his partner infused the event with a blend of humour and profound wisdom acquired over decades in the investing world. When an audience member asked him about the major mistakes people should avoid in both investing and life, Buffett said, ‘You should write your obituary first and then try to figure out how to live up to it’.”

Juncheng found that his concerns about AI echoed those of Buffett. Using the atomic bomb as an analogy, Buffett suggested that during World War II, people invented the atomic bomb with positive intentions, but were the results of the bomb actually positive for the next two centuries? Yet we had no choice about using it. Buffett continued, "Artificial intelligence can change the landscape of the globe, but it cannot change the minds and behaviour of people."

"Close up, Buffett is not just a very rich man. He is such an approachable person, humble, amiable, and always wearing a friendly smile." Juncheng continued, "It's certainly an overwhelming experience when the idol of your teenage years appears in front of you. You have read his books, been inspired by him, thought about conversations you would have with him, and now I feel especially fortunate to be able to have listened to him and been inspired by him in person."

"To experience this global event is something beyond words", Juncheng says. "Warren Buffett has been keeping his feet on the ground for decades, setting an exemplary model for all investors. As a young person, the only way to go far is to be steadfast in your dreams, discard your arrogance, and immerse yourself in the turbulent market to learn and accumulate."

From winning the Zhejiang Provincial Scholarship and founding the uFair Entrepreneurship Programme while at UNNC, to being shortlisted for the HSBC Global Graduate Programme and setting up the Cambridge Investment Management Club, Juncheng has seized growth opportunities and embarked on his journey towards his dream in the field of finance and investment.

"At over ninety, Buffett has maintained a great deal of energy and demonstrated a passion for his business, which has deeply impacted and inspired me,” Juncheng wrote. Sitting on the plane back to the UK, he knows that his extraordinary journey has only just begun.
