UNNC student secures full scholarship for direct-entry doctorate programme at Oxford
Ziming Wang, an Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduate from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), has been admitted to Oxford University to study an engineering doctoral degree. The degree is fully funded by the Clarendon Fund and starts this autumn. Ziming also received a second offer for an alternative doctoral programme at Oxford, an admissions letter for a doctorate at Cambridge, and yet another scholarship offer from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Determined to pursue a career in bioelectronics for clinical and neuroscience applications, he decided on the first Oxford offer.
Ziming believes that the key to him standing out among global competitors is his compatibility with research teams and his potential for research. "Outstanding scores are a great stepping stone, but more importantly, one should state clearly one's motivation and aspiration in their field," he said.
Since middle school, Ziming has been obsessed with model airplanes. With mechanics in mind, in his first year he joined UNNC's formula racing team as the Technical Director. Applying mechanical and electrical knowledge that he learned in class, he designed the electric car’s cooling system and also processed and installed the motor’s gear-set. This resulted in a car that participated in the national competition.
Talking about this experience, Ziming still remembers it vividly. "Here, I experienced another 'bigger' electrical power system, which deepened my interest in electronic engineering. This ultimately led me to choose it as my major."
In his spare time, Ziming participated in a number of summer research programmes and eventually decided to apply for an interdisciplinary engineering doctoral programme.
What left the deepest impression on Ziming was the summer vacation of his junior year. That summer, under the recommendation of Professor Jim Greer, he participated in the Cambridge Amgen Scholars Programme and encountered cutting-edge life science and bioengineering research. "Through this programme, I realised that interdisciplinary fields, especially the combination of electrical and electronic engineering and biomedical research, appeal to me very much. The charm of engineering lies in turning theories into practical solutions.” During his future doctoral studies, Ziming will explore the vast field of engineering.
"I think the most outstanding feature of UNNC is its emphasis on ‘humanism’ and ‘autonomy’, which is also the biggest difference between it and other local universities," Ziming said. He believes that UNNC is a people-oriented university where students can make the most of the inspiration they get on campus and make good use of the many forms of support the university provides. "For example, a rich variety of student organisations and societies, diverse student activities, the 'iWeek' orientation for new students, and the unique Chinese Cultural courses all allowed us to achieve a liberal education."
This “autonomy” is reflected in the fact that students can freely utilise their spare time after classes. "At UNNC, we have more freedom to explore our interests, delve deeper into study, and apply our knowledge through the university’s platforms. The free time not only provided us with a relaxed learning environment, but more importantly, it gave us the freedom to independently determine the direction of our development.”
